January 27, 2014

Father,

That's just great the Goose won a big game. What's up with the drama? Who cares what anyone says haha. Whether he plays or not is 6 years away no need to feel trouble or strife of the matter. Those Cougs know how to perform it sounds like? Did they lose to pretty decent teams or to a few chumps? No good to get smashed. What's Wasatch's record like? Are they going to be any good this year? I miss high school sports... Those were the days.

I actually had no idea about Sierra Wardle... That's too bad she was just about finished I think she was supposed to go home in June... She told me she sent a letter but I have yet to receive it... I'm proud of her for making that decision though... I think that'd be one of the hardest things in the world to do. We've definitely dealt with our share of those cases. We'll be sending one home today and one home on Wednesday for those same reasons. It's unfortunate. But when Elder Alston (my companion in the MTC) went home, one of the counselors in our branch presidency came in and said, "Elders, if the only life that Elder Alston saved while he was on his mission was his own, then he served a successful mission." I've always enjoyed and been comforted by that. It's true, you don't need a mission to get exalted, you do need to be forgiven of sin however. So good on em.

Sure a guy would snoop the details about the marketing business! Haha all is well. Sounds like the prophesy rings true... Whenever you start telling people work is slow it picks right back up. Glad you'll be able to provide for the crew a little longer. My little paws have yet to be treated, I don't have time to go to the doctor we're too busy. I've dealt with it for about two years now I can continue on in the fight. It's just ugly looking with like three dry cracked knuckles and the rest are fine. I've tried a few different OTC treatments but alas have gotten nowhere.

This week was really good. We had transfers as I have already mentioned. So pretty much Monday through Friday last week were booked with office work and administrative responsibilities. But we had a great meeting on Saturday morning with a member of the Seventy Elder Richards. We had a very good meeting and he laid down the law haha. He told us we were a bunch of kids and that we as a church are horrible teachers. We use too many words and try to get to fancy with our teaching by using little gimmicks and object lessons as we teach. He said drop the kid stuff and teach the pure doctrine. Anything else other then that as far as he's concerned if false doctrine and shouldn't be done. I enjoyed the scorning we've needed a better course of direction in some of these young whipper snappers lives out here. He gave a lot of great instruction and taught us things we all have heard before but needed the reminder in order to set us straight. Afterwards we were graced with the opportunity to take him tracting for two hours in a more wealthy part of our ward haha. With the split of our ward and us giving the east half to the sisters, we also lost all of the people we were working with being less actives, formers, and current investigators. So we've knocked a lot this weekend and I've enjoyed it a lot. I feel more like a  missionary when we knock haha. But as we were working he told us we need to switch our area to a more productive one for our exchanges so we can teach the zone leaders how to be better teachers and if we're knocking all day on exchanges then that won't happen. We're inclined to want to stay but we're pretty sure he talked to President about it so we'll see what happens. It was a neat experience to go out with him though. We got to ask him some questions about Hastening the Work and about leadership. As we asked questions about leadership he told us we needed to have another meeting that night with just us and President. As well as Elder Garns, he was there all day as well. He's the Area Seventy out here who lives in Valencia. But he taught us stuff that we once again already knew, but for some reason or another we're not super good at keeping it at the front of our minds. He told us in any leadership position in life, whether it be a career, church calling, parenting, etc. That there's three things you must do.

1)Teach pure doctrine by the spirit

2)Invite others to act

3)Minister or give help so they can achieve it

He said if you have a missionary who's not doing what they're supposed to, this is all you can do. Teach them why we don't do those things, invite them to do the correct thing, then offer help and say Elder what can I do for you? So not like he reinvented the wheel but he set us straight on who has the authority to call people on the carpet and singe their eyebrows, and those who do not. Basically no leader in the mission has the right to do that, except President Wilson. Which he'll need to do shortly cause we've had a couple hooligans as of late. But all is well and we're trying to resolve the issues. We had one night last week where we had to go out to Taft and interview a missionary, take his assignment, and drive out to Frazier Park to give it to another missionary. It was quite the escapade and we were late because some sisters got hit by some weasel in a parking lot and it jacked their steering column and popped their tire so we had to change the tire, but to no success cause they ended up not even being able to drive their car. So we were late for nothing haha.

We talked to some great potentials while we were tracting this weekend. Have a few people we're going to follow up with and see if we can help them come into the fold. We also talked to a couple who were less then enthused about Joseph Smith and us believing in a separate Jesus... Apparently our Bibles are different in regards to that we don't think of Jesus as a deity, but only a prophet and a good guy... He was polite in telling us we were wrong and he hopes we get to heaven one day haha. Hopefully he saves us a seat.

But that's about all I got for ya this week. Some good, some bad, and a chunk of ugly haha. Thank you very much for all you do. I love and miss you all very much so. I'm sure I'll talk to you before too long! Tell everyone in the ward hi for me when you bear your testimony Sunday!! ;)

January 20, 2014

Dad,

I remember the Tehrani's now. I didn't know their last name. But that's crazy that she's home. I remember very well taking the Golden Nugget to Park City to grab that eliptical or whatever it was. Very well payed I might add she's a great lady. I heard about the Seahawks and the Broncs... That's sweet I'm stoked about three things, obviously one is the hawks being in the big game again, two, Tom Brady and the Patriots aren't in the game. Three good ol' Manning is in. That's good news in the NCAA and NFL sounds like the LBL is struggling though.. (Little Ballers League) 0-5 that's like all of my baseball teams growing up haha. That was frustrating. Those filthy Jazz are going to be just good enough that they get like a 6th pick and throw off all next season. Which will be disheartening. I bet your friend Jabari goes to the Pelicans or the Bobcats or something lame...

I can't believe Spencer is home... It wasn't that long ago that I was sitting at Gary's house after his big talk... That's crazy. Jonesy getting home pretty swift too.. Provost should be home this month but he extended right? He'll be so excited to go to the big Swiss Days! Haha are the Ice castles any different then they've been in the past? Typically they're cool but I don't know that I'd travel the world to see it. They killed the grass a few years ago too when they did it at Town Square. That was annoying cause that's our ultimate frisbee field haha. When you say you're taking Bish to an ACN meeting is that big Dan or Bish McCotter? How much have you already racked up on my behalf? Did you ever get the NuSkin guy to sign up for anything? Here come all the questions haha. If we went into this business together what would our system be. I don't know jack diddly about anything marketing or business. I took sports marketing in high school and that's it haha. So you'll have to fill me in on what the game plan is with this business.

This past week we did a lot of office work... I don't know if I've ever told you but I'm in an office a lot... Haha we were able to have a couple good lessons actually. We taught an investigator who is the definition of a "yes man". We ask if he believes the Book of Mormon, he says yes. We ask if he believes in Joseph Smith, he says yes. We ask if he'll come to church, he says yes. But he never reads or comes to church and we've dropped him in the past but we picked him back up with the hopes he'd come to church cause we start at 11 now instead of 9 and his big thing was getting up early to oome to church haha. But we took a semi-active member with us to teach and he loved it. He said he just felt right about what he was doing and he wanted to be at the next lesson. We then actually went over to his house the next night and taught about the Temple. We've been trying to get them to go to the LA Temple to pray and set a goal for when they'd go through as a family. But that hasn't happened yet so we're trying. But other then that not a lot. We got a new Ward Mission Leader and he's great. He's a funny guy and enjoys missionary work so we should do well with him. We're also splitting our ward tomorrow and putting sisters in it. So that should be good. The ward has been neglected quite a bit since we've been in the office so much. So we're excited for them to have some missionaries that are going to work hard and do good things. I'll be in the office for at least another 6 weeks. Stay in the same area with Elder LaPlant. We'll have a Seventy who's going to meet with us on Saturday then we'll go proselyting with him. Then in a couple weeks the Missionary Department will be here and they'll go over some training and we'll go proselyting with one of them as well. So that'll be interesting. Now they're going know I'm a worthless missionary and I have a lot of improvements to make haha. Don't look forward to that too much. But that's all I got for this past week. So I love you much and thank you for all you do. Things are well here and couldn't ask for anything more.

Elder Scott

January 13, 2014

Dad,

Yupp another one bites the dust. I don't even know who the Terani girl is... Was she part of the 5th ward crowd that came in? I heard about the game updates. I'm stoked that the Seahawks have made it this far again. I love the ol' Seahawks. I like the niners too though. I'm also super stoked for Peyton to throw down on Tom. I can't stand that clown. But hey you know out of the past 6 years the only two super bowls I would've really cared to have watched have both been while I'm a missionary... Fancy that huh? Glad the Cougs have stepped up their game a little bit. March Madness is right around the corner... Have you been able to talk to Timmy about that gear? If not I understand it's not like it's a huge issue just curious. I saw Goovin score a bucket against the springville red devils... That filthy place is the only reason our record junior year was 24-1... What a joke. Why is Kara debating for school uniforms? Is she trying to force the issue or go against it? No one wants to wear a school uniform we're not catholic priests haha. Just enforce the dress code instead of letting kids get away with stuff. Haha. I'm sure she'll win. I can't believe how tall she's gotten. Nic sent some pictures of her and it's mind blowing...

I'm always right too so I'm sure that work will pick up soon. We live in a sick world with people who are always seeking to get gain at the expense of others. Just wait it'll happen.. On the bright side I've lost about 9 pounds in a week and a half with a new diet that I'm on. You ready for the magic ticket? Portion control... Who knew? Haha light breakfast, light lunch, and then one plate of whatever the members make for dinner! Haha I would love to go into business with you in this little network marketing gig you've been picking up. Because I had honestly thought about going into law just so I could work with you. But I don't want to be a lawyer so if we can make this work that'd be a much greater deal haha.

Sounds like things are pretty quiet though around the Scott home. That's not always a bad thing though. That's crazy the Erica is leaving for Wisconsin this week. That'll be awesome. Hopefully she lets the mission go through her rather then going through the mission... That's always a heart breaker... Those are good little tid bits about President Smith... It's funny how that works. Some of the greatest see no numerical success and some of the worst see lots of it. But ya know it happens. That's an awesome quote though. Wish that was written on every missionary apartment wall.

This past week was good. We had zone conferences on Tuesday and Wednesday for us and then the other side was Thursday and Friday. So they went pretty well. Elder LaPlant and I each gave a training about faith based goals which went really well. One of the office missionaries cried... So we know we affected someone... Not exactly the target we were aiming for though haha. We've been working on transfers too so that's in the process right now. Hopefully we'll be able to make it happen next week. This transfer went by very quickly. I can't believe we're practically half way through the month of January... We were able to pick up a former investigator and his girlfriend this past week. That was good he's pretty apathetic about the whole thing but she's the main reason we go back. She has the light. They struggle committing to do things... But we also taught our good friend Chris. He's awesome. He wants to go on a mission and get baptized and everything... But his mom is still holding him back which is super frustrating! But that's the way it goes unfortunately. We'll see what the future has in store. I absolutely love the Stockdale ward. One of the main reasons that I ever come back to Bakersfield is going to be for the families in this ward cause they're awesome. But other then that nothing super crazy and awesome. So I guess I'll let ya go till next time. Thank you for your kind words and your continued prayers and support. I'll be praying for some business to come your way. I already do that but I'll try and make it extra fervent. How's your family scripture study going? Or your missionary efforts? Have you been going the extra mile? If not, I would exhort you that ye would ask God the Eternal Father in the name of Christ if these things will help you. :) Do I sound like a missionary yet it's only been 20 months? Haha Love ya lots and I'll talk to you next week! Thanks for everything!!!!

Elder Scott

January 7, 2014

Father,

I'm pretty sure he's just looking for some shorts. I appreciate you love and devotion as well. Highly encouraging to have such great influences backing my every move. Sorry I didn't get to you yesterday we've been slammed. We started working on transfers yesterday and today we had zone conference this morning and we have another one tomorrow then the other Assistants will handle the East side of the mission. So we've been hectic. That's too bad that they Cougs have gotten rocked in their two conference games... I can't believe that the U is doing something with themselves regarding hoops... That's unheard of. That's too bad they're getting a bunch of numbers stacked on the losing side of the record. But hey it's 5th grade not the NBA haha. Glad Goovy is doing well though. That kids going to carry on the family name for sports the way I couldn't deliver haha. I hear the playoffs have been decent. It's too bad the Eagles couldn't come out against the Saints... But I'm rooting for Seattle or San Fran. I don't mind any of the other teams except the stupid Patriots. I wouldn't mind seeing that program tank haha. Look how negative I am... Goodness.

It sounds like the holiday season was a success back in happy valley. I can't wait for next years ping pong tournament so I can show everyone how the pro's played back in Nam.... Haha jk I am excited to enjoy the familial festivities again though. But that's a long ways away. Battle of the Sexes is a new tradition. Sounds like it gives us men another thing to be better at then women haha. Poor Gina...

Every time you say work is getting slow someone ends up filing some huge law suit so I'm sure you'll be fine. Just keep paying your tithing and doing what your supposed to and what needs to happen will and what shouldn't happen won't haha. Always easier said then done but you can handle it. Didn't you have a story of when you were in Vegas and you went in to tell the Bishop you didn't think you were going to be able to pay your tithing and he told you to double it? I hope that's a correct memory cause I may have told a couple people that story... Haha oops.  Glad Nic is using her time wisely. Jordan does definitely seem to be enjoying herself. Sounds like she and Kory get along just fine and have had a lot of fun together.

This past week was fairly uneventful even with the new year. Elder LaPlant was sick for the majority of the week and ended up being inside. But it was kind of nice to relax and ponder and study. It's been a while so it was a good way to learn and grow. We focused on faith based goals in zone conference today. Elder LaPlant and I each gave a little training which I was a little worried about because I didn't get to sleep until about 1:30 last night and we had to get up at 6 to get over there. But it went pretty well and we're still functioning properly. We taught our investigator Chris last week. The kid is so prepared it's unbelievable... If only he could get baptized. If he jumps in next year when he's 18 I'd like to come back for it and be there. He's a super good kid. Other then that we have some work planned this week. But with transfer preparations and another zone conference who knows where we'll be... From the looks of it I'll be around here for a little longer as well... Which I don't mind. It's been a fun run and I enjoy it. I don't like having so many eyes on me all the time though. I like to fly under the radar... I try to have my example be the means of a standard rather then a justification, but sometimes it might be used as a justification... Yikes all is well I'm not perfect. Haha I love you very much and always enjoy hearing from you. Remember who you are and what you stand for and I'll talk to you next week!!

December 31, 2013

Yeah it's been a while hasn't it? Sounds like the hunt was a success. Gotta love the ol ground pound when it comes to pheasants haha. Good looking rooster though. Go goose. Killed his cousin. Sports world sounded pretty good as far as professional ball... That's too bad for the Y... Tell Goose to stick out the dentist... I hate going to that place. Uncle Matt drills your mouth haha. I can't believe Taylor and Hannah are married!

Nothing has really changed with me haha. Spent some of your hard earned money already. That took me super long. Got myself a watch and a new pair of tenny's cause mine were thrashed.... The watch was half off so it was justifiable and the shoes were at Ross so I was shopping smart. For the most part haha. I do appreciate all you've done for me over the course of my mission. Without you I wouldn't be out here so I'm pretty grateful for that. We proselyted for a good 6 hours last Friday which was nice. The highlight of that event was talking to a part member family who the member wasn't home but we talked to the wife and she was super open and interested in eternal families and is going to try and read from the Book of Mormon. We're going back next week to talk more so hopefully that goes over well. She was super friendly and he's a nice guy too. Just hope that they both have the same goal instead of one dragging the other. But alas that's about it! I love you very much and hope your week goes well. I'll talk to you next week!
